New Centre Brings Irish History To Life

Visitors to northern ireland can discover the seat of ancient kings and queens and trace the history and folklore of the region by visiting the navan centre near ireland’s oldest city, armagh (40 miles south-west of belfast). the centre, reopened with a new look after four years of closure, interprets of one of ireland’s most important archaeological sites: ‘emain macha’ or navan fort, legendary early capital of ulster.
visitors can walk through history from pre-christian ireland, tour the ‘vanished world’ of lost myths and experience the ‘real world’ of archaeology through a mixture of hi-tech and ancient exhibits, such as traces of a giant celtic temple built in 95bc. according to christian scribes, irish history began with the founding of navan fort and the centre recalls stories from the ‘ulster cycle’ of irish legends. living history interpreters bring the early christian period to life. admission £4.50, tel: 028 3752 8545. website: www.navancentre.com
