Yorkshire theatre is 50: playwright alan ayckbourn has unveiled a plaque at his home theatre in yorkshire commemorating stephen joseph who established the uk’s first theatre-in-the-round. the stephen joseph theatre, opened in the seaside resort of scarborough in 1955, has been celebrating all year, with highlights including ayckbourn’s play “private fears in public places” touring to new york. website: www.sjt.uk.com

robot tour guide: the world’s first robotic tour guide has started work in scotland. robox, built in switzerland, is part of a permanent robotics exhibition at the sensation science centre in dundee (opened july 1). visitors can interact with the exhibits, taking charge of a robot in the robo arena and programming a robotic arm. website: www.sensation.org.uk.
